Things to do in Pleasant Valley, Austin

Pleasant Valley consists mainly of low-rent apartments and low-cost condos. Traditionally, it has been populated by University of Texas students attracted by the low-cost housing and transportation provided by the university, as well as young, single professionals.

The neighborhood has many low-cost restaurants and service businesses to serve the large student population. A large neighborhood park is being constructed in the neighborhood, and the proximity to the lake provides this neighborhood with opportunities to walk, bike, and enjoy the outdoors.

Pleasant Valley has mainly new, low-cost, apartment and condo style housing. There are not many houses; most of the empty space is being taken up by more apartments and condos. Because of the low housing cost here, it is home to many university students. The University of Texas still operates a shuttle between the neighborhood and the campus. The neighborhood is also close to one of the campuses of the Austin Community College.

As a result of the student presence, some of the apartment complexes have a strong student atmosphere, with clubhouses, pool tables, and arcade games. The neighborhood also has a lot of businesses to cater to students, such as computer repair services, fitness clubs, pool halls, some grocery stores, and a lot of cheap and fast food restaurants. There is also a branch of the Austin public library. However there is very little in the way of nightlife or music.

The neighborhood is not adjacent to any local highways or thoroughfares, so commuting in and out of the neighborhood is not as convenient as with some other neighborhoods. But E. Riverside Dr. passes through the neighborhood, providing a path to south Austin and downtown.

The neighborhood is large, but much of it is taken up by the 400-acre Roy G. Guerrero Park, which is one of the bright spots of the neighborhood. The park was purchased as parkland in the early 2000s and opened in July 2013. In addition to a huge playscape, it features ball fields, playgrounds, hiking and bike trails, and a disc golf course.

The neighborhood is also bounded by Lady Bird Lake to the north. Along with Guerrero Park, Lakeshore Park is one of the up and coming attractions of this neighborhood. The Riverside Golf Course is also in the east section of the neighborhood.

Pleasant Valley still has a reputation for being unreputable and unsafe. Being adjacent to Montopolis, one of the poorest neighborhoods in Austin, doesn’t help. But as more public facilities are built here, the neighborhood is expected to steadily improve.
