Galindo dates back to the 1950s and still retains much of its character from that era. Galindo is not as well known as some of the other south Austin neighborhoods, but it offers many of the same benefits to residents: proximity to the trendy boutiques, cafes, and clubs of south Austin, easy access to local highways, and lower housing costs compared to downtown.
Although there are not yet that many popular restaurants and lounges within the neighborhood itself, this is changing as the city and neighborhood population grow. Also, the many attractions of SoCo and South Lamar are right nearby.
The neighborhood is quiet and residential; the only busy commercial street is South First St. which has local restaurants. On other streets, speed bumps and signs encourage drivers to slow down. The very active neighborhood association promotes neighborhood improvement and quality of life.
Within the neighborhood is the South Austin Park and Recreation Center, which houses multiple sports and recreation venues for children and adults. Other parks are nearby, as is the downtown jog and bike trail.
